Readymix downsizes Tweed quarry plans

A major building supply company has scaled back plans for an extension to its Tweed quarry in northern NSW.

The manager of Readymix Holdings, Bruce Nicholson, says extensive community consultation and environmental assessments prompted the decision.

Readymix has decided to extend the Terranora quarry by about 5.5 hectares instead of 21.

But Mr Nicholson says that does not mean the original plans were not necessary.

"The resource that we're looking at taking out now is probably the premium resource, slightly deeper than the original pit design," he said.

"We've obviously remodelled the pit design to optimise the resource removal so I guess we don't believe that it was in excess of what was needed, certainly a company like Readymix needs to make decisions on long-term planning."

But Nola Miller from the Stop the Quarry group says residents do not want the quarry in any form.

"They're just totally against any development at all, they have believed for the last years that this quarry was closed down and for now Readymix to reopen it is just drastic news for the residents," she said.
